If you never knew Scott Crabtree, you missed out on knowing a very special person. I have many happy memories of being out of school for “snow days”. Scott would fire up his neon orange Chevy pick-up truck and slide on the ice to pick up Jennifer McPhail and myself for the day.

Unfortunately, the truck had a couple of problems and required ALL THREE of us to drive it during inclement weather. When it was snowing, one of us had to reach out the window and work the windshield wipers manually while Scott drove (stick shift of course), in addition, the latch on the passenger side door was not working properly so, if you did not hold the door shut, it would fly open when we turned the corner; therefore it was the person in the middle who was responsible for holding onto the person on the passenger side, who was holding onto the door, during turns.

At one point, our luck ran out; while traveling on a solid sheet of ice, with cold arms manually wiping the windshield, the truck suddenly slid sideways causing the door to fly open, the grip on the wipers was lost and we spun, holding on to each other, and hit the curb, knocking the tire off the truck.

Luckily, nobody fell out and nobody got hurt; we just laughed hysterically. We were forced to slide through the rest of the day on foot, eventually finding some welcomed warmth in a pizza parlor on campus corner.

I met scott in the sixth grade and we had so much in common we were good friends right away. We would fish or noodle at the south canadian river or any number of ponds around Norman. If not that then hunting for our next pet snake. We also would fly model airplanes with his Dad he was quite the plane builder. my only regret is not seeing scott in at least 10 years and not knowing he was having problems. I will miss him and wish his family all the best.
